Standards for ubiquitous electric car fast charging stations promoted by CHAdeMO

Standardized and ubiquitous charging stations are a must for electric cars to thrive, particularly to make electric vehicles’ (EVs) recharging time approach the time and convenience of refilling a fuel-burning car when an EV is used for longer trips.  A group of Japanese businesses including Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Fuji Heavy Industries (aka Subaru) are [...]

Oregon’s Electric Vehicle (EV) and Alternative Fuel Vehicle Infrastructure Report

Here’s the report to Governor Kulongoski on Electric Vehicle (EV) and Alternative Fuel Vehicles Infrastructure, representing the culmination of work over the past year by a special working group on the topic.

Disruptive Technologies in Transport Fuels – Betting on Science

Accenture identifies Transportation Electrification as a game change, further acknowledging the potential of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), via demonstration projects to date “have proven that V2G has the potential to significantly disrupt supply and demand relationships — with end electricity consumers potentially becoming an essential grid storage resource — and to change the landscapes for electric power and transport fuels.”

Smart Grid Course being offered again at Portland State University

I wanted to share that once again the ground-breaking course “Designing the Smart Grid for Sustainable Communities” will be offered this Winter and Spring terms (2010) through the Executive Leadership Institute at Portland State University. I was fortunate to have taken this two-term course series on the Smart Grid when it was first offered in January through June of 2009 and I found it to be of immense value in learning about sustainability issues and the smart grid.

Why Smart Charging is important for Electric Vehicles, part I

I had the opportunity to speak to Oregon’s Alternative Fuel Vehicles Infrastructure Working Group last week. The purpose of my presentation was to identify Smart Charging considerations as Oregon is planning and deploying electric vehicle charging stations. How can Oregon prepare for mass adoption of EVs yet avoid unintended consequences such as local electrical grid congestion?
